Fly Like Paper Get High Like Planes
MIA reference! WOOT. Tired. Decided to do something I've always wanted to do: EXPRESSIONS! Paperman has some great ones. These are all from the short. I hope to redo this assignment when I'm not beat.

Leyendecker Reprise
Did direct painting this time, I just stared with the eye and moved on from there. I like the result better this time, still needs work capturing the essence of the painting. Time to move on!
HOOTERS!!! O_O
Today was a good day all around :) I am really tired, but I still did some drawing and I can definitely feel my drawing muscles getting stronger. I began my search tonight for a subject the same way as always...Google. I started with the thought of eyes since I have always liked them but I wanted different kind of eyes and they just kept showing me human eyes with little character in them so I moved onto animals and owls were the first ones to come up and then I ended up doing what I did. I actually started to get into the bottom one a little which is the sensation I want when I draw in general.
Anyway, I will be in Sacramento for the weekend and will probably be back late Monday so I may not post till monday night or at the latest tuesday morning...but I still have every intention of keeping on my drawings. I will just post all that I do over the weekend when I get back :)
Deck the Halls
Leyendecker Master copy!!! This is even harder than Sargent. Decided to break from the rock. Spent too much time on this and I was distracted by the Tv. total 2 hours and nothing got done. Going to hit this again
Next time in Black in White, I was looking at it in color, and going set a time limit. I may also limit the amount of copying I do. For instance the next drawing will be of the eye, and just the eye.
Very tough. Also did it in PS because I'm sick of Acrylic. . .
I was getting pretty discouraged, but remembered Leyendecker is a freakin master. He's poured in countless hours of study and was probably a genius. Also one of the most well known and influential American Illustrators of all time. A contemporary of Rockwell and a student to Wyeth, I mean c'mon! I definitely have a new respect for the old masters.

Ugggggh...I feel like I draw like a kid...and I suppose in some senses that is true. I know I just need to put more time into things, but this is part of my issue with drawing in the first place...I know I should be better than I am currently because I should have put in the time. Only have myself to blame :/
Anyway, haven't really drawn a motorcycle before so wasn't 100% sure how to go about it at the beginning. I aimed for the bigger shapes but neglected the volume of the shapes at first which bugged me and then I realized I still can't free hand a decent circle so I shall put that on the list of things to work on.
I know I have been neglecting details in most of my pictures thus far and that may continue because I think it is more important to just "doodle" something and post it to get the habit built in and then I just build upon time and "quality" from there.

We Will Rock You
Running out of rock related titles. Decided to switch up the pallet setup.
Worked on the shadow first, too much water and I started lifting paint. Then I moved to the middle, lots of blending and it started to work on the right side. Still need to sort out some edges but its working out slowly. I have a major headache, tried to relax and push the painting but I gave in and just took some advil.

| Day 03 Rock Study |
Ended up watching Captain America and so I figured I would TRY to draw him. Didn't want to post this because I couldn't get a handle on it and none of it looks good. I first tried to draw the image on the right, but when I finally got frustrated with trying to capture the pose I decided to go for a cartoon version instead and still wasn't completely happy. Plus side I am drawing more, just need to get past this awkward stage and get back in the swing of things. :/
Is the image too small? Should I just post them as separate images like you do?

Stuck Between a Rock and a rock. . .
Decided to try another composition, one that gave the rock more dimension.
Blocked in the predominate shapes. Attempted to render a little, wasn't working. I'm going to take another crack at it tomorrow. Hopefully for 2 hours then put it to rest.

The Rock Continued. . .
Might have over worked it. I feel like I added too much black in the shadows.
I also posted on another blog and asked suggestions from other people. One suggestion was to recompose it so that it looked 3D. I feel like this picture has better form. What do you think?

Back Scratchin Bub
I always thought it'd be funny watching Wolverine trying to scratch his own back. Quick drawings, two for one today! Going to do some hand studies cuz mines are UGLAH.
Big Fish
One of my favorite actors, I need to study some of his films. Any who I focused on structure and then added values. Trying to find a style or technique to finish my drawings.
Fun, quick, and hopefully closer to likeness. I can feel it coming back! Or coming at all, I think I'm getting better.
Zoo tomorrow, sleep required asap.

Passing Glass
Attempt to render glass in black and white. It needs more time, which I will give. Maybe I'll keep it as a WIP and post my results daily. What's really important here is the background, it gives the glass its contour and defines its shapes and values. Also the highlights really make it seem like glass.

To Tree or not to Tree
Second pass at tree. Measured first, did a gesture, then started blocking in with a special brush. Jon Apilado gave em to me, and a few nice settings to in Brush Settings. I turned scatter on and noise. Also I tried to stick to the form principles: highlight, local, mid, core, shadow, reflected etc. I was more awake and I feel like this one turned out better than the last.

Gee Ima Tree
Trees. Need to work on this. Form principle for sure. . . Also tried color. I would have worked more but I'm pretty tired. Had work for 6 hours, then figure drawing in Palo Alto. I'll do another tree tomorrow, probably black white with better form.

Unnatural Grace
Grace Kelly drawing. Bad likeness, but I'm understanding the proportions better and the structure of the eyes/nose. Look up Andrew Loomis for more info on solid heads!

Seeing Spots
Still trying to get a hang painting in PS and learn about form. Reference photo, not much light though. Trying to prep for Zoo drawing at Happy Hollow. Most of the time my cats end up looking like bears. . . I think bear snouts are longer and the cheeks of bears are poofier. I might go back and rework the rendering on this even though it was a fast pass.

Drill Sargent
THIS WAS HARD. Face looks a little fat and features too small. Portraits are a weakens I am hoping to overcome. I'll do more of these over summer, but it was great practice for values. I kept it simple, hard round brush. One thing I really learned was about the power of pure black and white. I held it back until the end and it popped out the eyes and that black shape on the right side of her head really gave her definition.
Yeah definitely more PRACTICE, but I really learned a lot and I'm gonna get this down!!! BOOYA

Jaguar Dreamin
To prep for the Zoo trip tomorrow, I hope I can go despite my injuries, I started studying the Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals. For this 15 min sketch, I didn't take it to seriously. I also failed at trying to make up my own light source but I'll work on it! Back to Still Life tomorrow!

Still Life
Since I'm hurt, no work today, thought I'd knock one out in case I couldn't later.
45 minutes, just trying to get the shapes and values. Direct painting. This was complicated, so I'm going to do one thing at a time. . . especially the metallic and glass. Those need to be individual studies.
Rendering in PS is the easy part. I figure I'll render less and focus on shapes and values, less on edges.

Gold
Value Painting of Gary Cooper. Tried to just do direct painting in PS with the Hard, Round Brush. Did a little rendering in the right cheek. I think I need to get better placement of objects for a better likeness. Took about one hour.

Lord of the Dance!
Quick Sketch in PS. Tried to limit myself to under 30 mins. At first I had him jumping but. . . the splits seemed more appropriate! SMART goals:
1.I will work on my hero tree drawing daily for 1 hour, getting the final design by this Friday and final composition by Wednesday.
2. I will paint in acrylic 3 times a week, on days I do not work. Starting simple with pencil for values the first week and moving into black in white the second week, then color the third.
3. I will work in maya 3 days a week for 2 hours. I will start with basic drop tests: ball, heavy light ball, pendulum/ arm slap, walk cycle. Then move into jump tests, voice syncing by mid July (optimism)
